Masonic Hall Conversion

Balmain Hall Conversion

This project involved the conversion of this 2-storey Masonic Hall into a 3 storey mixed-use building with retail at street level and a residence and home office on the upper levels. The building is heritage listed and it was important to retain many of the original heritage features, including the building fa̤ade and ceiling details. The renovation now includes:

  • A discreet additional loft level with new terrace that opens up to panoramic city views
  • Sliding timber doors allowing the loft to be opened seamlessly onto the roof terrace
  • Office and kitchenette behind concertina doors allowing the loft to double as an entertainment area
  • New bathroom offering a shower with full height windows opening to a private deck area
  • Framed views of both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Anzac Bridge

Due to the complex nature of the building use and heritage issues, the project required careful negotiation with Council to achieve compliance with Fire Safety Regulations, the Building Code of Australia and interpretation of a broad range of Council codes and plans.
