This project began when an elderly couple were seeking to downsize from their 4 bedroom two-storey residence. The couple decided to subdivide their block and create a smaller more manageable dwelling complete with a garage and a garden rather than make the major lifestyle change of moving to a retirement village or unit development. During construction of the dwelling their daughters decided to purchase the original house to be in close proximity to their aging parents.
The design brief for the dwelling called for an efficiently planned self contained dwelling to replace the accumulated clutter of a poor 70¥ús additions to the rear of the site and build a new home that provided:
- Innovative living areas with bright sun drenched spaces
- Excellent cross-ventilation
- Comfortable access to versatile outdoor entertaining areas
- Good security & low maintenance
- Strong and fluid spatial connection throughout
The internal material selection takes advantage of the soft, rich hues and texture of timber and bamboo flooring. The design was driven by a preference for a natural aesthetic promoting a healthy living environment free from artificial and chemical finishes, contrasting with the strength and texture of the exposed concrete block walls.
